Arizona Monsoon Season: Tire Tread, Hydroplaning & Wet Road Safety

Monsoon season runs from mid-June through September, and it produces the most dangerous driving conditions Arizona sees all year. Not because the rain is heavy β€” though it can be β€” but because the roads have been baking dry for months. That first downpour lifts accumulated oil and rubber dust off the pavement and turns it into a film that behaves like ice.

Your tires are the only thing standing between you and that film. Here is how to know whether yours are up to it.

Check Your Tread Depth Properly

The penny test is famous but too forgiving. Placing a penny upside down in the tread groove tells you when you have hit 2/32″, which is the legal minimum β€” and by that point wet-weather performance has already collapsed.

Use a quarter instead. If the tread does not reach Washington’s head, you are at or below 4/32″, and you should be planning replacement before monsoon season peaks. Independent testing consistently shows wet stopping distance increasing dramatically between 4/32″ and 2/32″ β€” often by 40 to 90 feet from highway speed.

Check in three places across each tire β€” inner, center, outer. Uneven wear tells you something else is wrong, usually alignment or chronic underinflation.

How Hydroplaning Actually Happens

Hydroplaning is a simple physics problem. Your tire has to evacuate water through its grooves faster than the road is feeding water under it. When it cannot, a wedge of water lifts the tire off the pavement and you have no steering, no braking, and no traction.

Three things determine when that happens:

  • Speed. The single biggest factor. Risk rises sharply above roughly 45 mph in standing water.
  • Tread depth. Shallow grooves hold less water. This is why worn tires hydroplane at speeds that new tires handle easily.
  • Tire pressure. Underinflated tires develop a concave contact patch that traps water in the center instead of channeling it out.

If you feel the steering go light and the engine note change, do not brake hard and do not jerk the wheel. Ease off the throttle, hold the wheel straight, and let the tire find pavement again.

Arizona Heat and Tire Pressure

Here is a genuinely Arizona-specific problem. Tire pressure rises about 1 PSI for every 10Β°F increase in temperature. On a 115Β°F afternoon with hot pavement, a tire set to 35 PSI in a cool garage can easily read 42 PSI or more.

The temptation is to bleed air out to bring it back to spec. Do not. Check and set pressure when tires are cold β€” first thing in the morning, before driving. Setting pressure hot leaves you dangerously underinflated the next morning, which increases heat buildup and blowout risk exactly when you are least prepared for it.

The correct pressure is on the door jamb placard, not on the tire sidewall. The sidewall number is the maximum the tire can hold, not what your vehicle wants.

Tread Design Matters More Than You Think

If you run aggressive mud-terrain tires, you should know that they generally perform worse on wet pavement than a good all-terrain. The large voids that make M/Ts excellent in mud provide less rubber contact and less siping on smooth wet asphalt.

Practical Monsoon Driving Rules

  1. Slow down before you think you need to. Most hydroplaning incidents happen at speeds that felt fine thirty seconds earlier.
  2. Double your following distance. Wet stopping distance is dramatically longer, especially on that first-rain oil film.
  3. Never drive into moving water. Arizona’s Stupid Motorist Law exists for a reason. Six inches of moving water can move a truck.
  4. Turn on headlights. Required by law in Arizona whenever wipers are running.
  5. Avoid cruise control in rain. If the vehicle hydroplanes, cruise control may add throttle at exactly the wrong moment.

Also Check Your TPMS

Tire pressure monitoring sensors have batteries, and those batteries last roughly five to ten years. A dead sensor means you lose your early warning for a slow leak β€” which is precisely what you want working during monsoon season. If your TPMS light has been on or flickering, get it diagnosed and reset rather than ignoring it.
