Load Range C, D and E: Picking the Right Truck Tire
Two tires can be the same size, the same brand and the same tread pattern, and behave completely differently β because one is a load range C and the other an E. It is one of the least understood numbers on a truck tire and one of the most consequential.
What Load Range Means
Load range describes how much weight a tire can carry at its maximum rated pressure. It grew out of the old ply rating system, from when tires really were built from stacked layers of cotton.
Modern tires do not have that many plies. The letter now indicates equivalent strength, not literal construction:
- Load range C β 6-ply rated, lower maximum pressure, lighter construction
- Load range D β 8-ply rated, the middle ground
- Load range E β 10-ply rated, highest capacity and pressure, stiffest sidewall
You will also see F and G on heavy-duty and commercial fitments.
Higher Is Not Better
This is the mistake. Load range E sounds like the safe, tough choice, so people buy it for a half-ton that never carries anything.
What you get instead:
- A harsher ride, because the sidewall is built to carry weight that is not there
- More weight per corner β unsprung mass that hurts braking and acceleration
- Worse traction when aired down, since a stiff sidewall resists forming a footprint
- Higher price and marginally worse fuel economy
An E-rated tire on an empty half-ton rides on the top of the tread and skates over bumps. That is not toughness, it is a mismatch.
Matching Range to Use
Load Range C
Half-ton trucks and mid-size trucks that carry people and gear rather than payload. Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado, a Silverado 1500 used as a daily driver. Best ride, best off-road compliance when aired down, plenty of capacity for what these trucks actually do.
Load Range D
The sensible middle. A half-ton that tows a boat or a trailer on weekends, or a heavier build carrying bumpers, a winch and armour. Extra capacity without the ride penalty of an E.
Load Range E
Three-quarter and one-ton trucks, and anything that tows or hauls seriously. On an 8×170 Super Duty or an 8×180 heavy-duty GM this is the correct choice, not an upgrade.
Pressure Is Part of the Specification
Load range only delivers its rated capacity at its rated pressure. Running an E-rated tire at the pressure printed on your door jamb β a figure calculated for the factory tire β leaves you with a stiff tire that is also underinflated for its construction.
Conversely, inflating an E to its maximum on an empty truck gives you a ride that will loosen your fillings.
The right pressure depends on load range, tire size and actual axle weight. It is worth setting properly once rather than guessing.
Arizona Adds a Reason to Care
Heat is the enemy of an underinflated tire. Sidewall flex generates heat, heat degrades the carcass, and a July afternoon on the I-10 supplies plenty of ambient heat before the tire adds its own.
An underinflated E-rated tire on a loaded truck is a genuine failure risk here in a way it is not in a cooler climate. Check pressure cold, monthly, and before any towing trip.
How to Choose
- Start from what the truck actually carries and tows, not what it might one day
- Half-ton daily driver: load range C, and enjoy the ride
- Occasional towing or a heavy build: load range D
- Three-quarter ton and up, or regular towing: load range E
- Set pressure for the tire and the load, not from habit
